Tokyo is a collection of cities that share a rail map. A hotel near Tokyo Station is practical for a first night after a flight and awkward as a base for Shimokitazawa, Kichijoji, or a late drink in Golden Gai. Changing hotels once is not indecisive. It is how you stop spending the trip on the Yamanote Line in the wrong direction.
A useful split: three nights somewhere dense and well connected — Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Tokyo Station depending on your trains — and two nights in a neighborhood with a different temperature. Yanaka and the museums of Ueno reward a morning on foot. Nakameguro and Daikanyama reward a slower afternoon. Asakusa looks like the traditional choice and is; it is also a tourist district with an early bedtime compared with Shinjuku. Stay there when Senso-ji at opening time matters more than nightlife.
Book the rail, then the room
If you are using a rail pass, activate it on the morning you actually need the long-distance trains, not on the day you land. Narita or Haneda into the city is a separate ticket and a separate hour. Hotel check-in and a pass you cannot use yet is a common overlap. For day trips — Kamakura, Yokohama, Nikko — leave from the hotel closest to the right station. That is a reason to put the classic-ward nights first or last, not in the middle of a neighborhood stay you will abandon at 7:00.
Business hotels are small and reliable. A room that says “12 square meters” means it. If you need a real desk or a third bag, filter for it before you fall for the station-adjacent price. Ryokan-style stays in the city exist and should be booked like Kyoto: meal plan, curfew, and futon confirmed in writing.
One reservation habit
Popular restaurants in Tokyo still run on bookings, and some run on a lottery or a phone call in Japanese. Decide which meals are the point — a sushi counter, a tiny ramen shop you will queue for, an ordinary excellent dinner you can walk into — and only chase reservations for the first category. Two booked meals in a five-night stay is plenty. The rest of the city is built for walking in hungry.
